چکیده

This is a fine introductory text to the field of neuroradiology. The title of the book is appropriate; this work is neither too exhaustive nor too brief. We believe that the basic objectives of this work have been met: namely, a good medium-sized textbook for radiology, neurology, and neurosurgery residents. The volume will also be useful for other physicians as well as medical students interested in neuroradiology. It should serve as a stimulus for further study by the interested reader. The book is composed of fifteen chapters covering a broad scope of neuroradiology, including X-rays of the normal skull, normal and abnormal vasculature, congenital malformations, vascular diseases, intracranial tumors, infections, trauma, neurological disorders, and the spine. Unfortunately, more recent developments in diagnostic imaging, including digital subtraction angiography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and positron emission tomography are not included. However, this is understandable given the textbook's goals. Eleven of the fifteen chapters are written by Dr. Sarwar, two by Dr. Azar-Kia, and two by Dr. Batnitzky. The tables including differential diagnosis and key radiographic features are, in general, very good. Reproduction of X-rays and CT scans are usually good to excellent (with some exceptions, such as the relatively poor reproduction of a pneumoencephalogram on page 610). Occasional labeling or spelling errors are also noted. On Figure 6B, page 287, M, representing medulla, should be labeled MN for mesencephalon. On page 384, Figure 27A, SCF should instead be CSF (for cerebrospinal fluid). The discussion of pituitary adenomas on page 606 using the older terminology based on light microscopic findings is antiquated in light of today's immunohistochemical, electron microscopic, and hormone assay techniques. In addition, the clinician might take exception to statements such as "angiography has no effect on the spasm" (vasospasm) on page 461. However, these are relatively minor criticisms, and are not meant to detract from what is in general a fine textbook exploring the basics of neuroradiology. This book is highly recommended to the previously noted group of physicians and medical students.

Why a World Federation of Neuroradiology Societies?

I n our rapidly evolving world, neuroradiology already has a past and a palpable story. The first neuroradiologic examinations were invasive and date back to the early 20th century. The first Symposium Neuroradiologicum was organized 79 years ago. Since then, neuroradiology has progressed with dynamism but without acquiring recognition as a true specialty worldwide. Objectively speaking, neuror...

Cardiac Complication Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Besides its severe neurological injuries, spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) commonly causes cardiac complications. These complications could include three different aspects of cardiac diseases, that is, electrocardiographic abnormalities, myocardial injuries, and left ventricular dysfunction. These complications not only may lead to misdiagnosis of SAH as myocardial infarction, but also...
